“Social media platforms drive surges of dopamine to the brain to keep consumers coming back over and over again. The shares, likes and comments on these platforms trigger the brain’s reward center, resulting in a high similar to the one people feel when gambling or using drugs.”
This feeling, this dopamine rush makes it difficult to stop the constant checking, so for me turning off the notifications has made a major difference in my productivity and anxiety. When I would see the notification pop up on my screen, there would be this anxiousness to check it, to respond... to see what it was. It made me feel overwhelmed and really took away from my ability to concentrate at work or when I was with others. So... I now say no to notifications, and check in on my own time.
