In February of 2020, I decided to try out a 30 Day Program from an amazing company, Purium. During the 30 days, I used their transformation pack and followed their guidelines. One of those guidelines was to cut out several food items from my diet, one of them was dairy, It was during those 30 days that I realized the negative effect dairy was having on my gut health.
For many years, I struggled with digestive issues, IBS type symptoms, constant acid reflux and bloating. After an endoscopy and other tests, I was diagnosed with a hiatal hernia and put on Nexium. This and losing some weight helped with the reflux, but I still was having major IBS type issues. No real solution was given, and never once was gut health education provided. Through the program I began to learn the importance of maintaining a healthy guy biome, and the importance of eating organics and avoiding processed foods.
After the 30 days, I felt like a different person. My mood was better, my stress level was low, my skin cleared up, my allergies were under control and I no longer has any IBS type symptoms. I began to add items back into my diet... one being dairy, because man do I LOVE cheese. But, I found that cheese did not love me back. The bloating and urgent need to run to the bathroom came back with a vengeance. I found that I had an intolerance to dairy products. I wish one of the medical professionals I sought treatment from had suggested an elimination diet, I may have had relief years sooner.
Now, I am not saying everyone should give up dairy, but it is one of the most common food intolerances, along with gluten and hydrogenated seed oils. So, if you have digestive issues, it may be helpful to look into an elimination diet to research the foods that are creating gut issues for you. From time to time, I do give dairy another shot, but it does not allows go well. Thankfully, there are tons of great dairy free options to substitute my love of cheese. Reach out for suggestions and my favorite brands.
Here are several how-tos for elimination diets.
JJ Virgin also has a fantastic book called the Virgin Diet that walks you through her elimination diet step by step.
