Somatic Practices Day 3

Writer's picture: Melissa PowellMelissa Powell

I am always looking for new ways te up my wellness game... I have seen somatic practice pop up over and over and I decided to give it a shot. What is a somatic practice?

Somatic exercises are a form of bodywork that emphasizes internal physical perception and experience. These exercises aim to increase body awareness and promote relaxation, often focusing on slow, deliberate movements and mindfulness. The goal is to improve the mind-body connection, enhance physical function, reduce tension, and alleviate chronic pain.

Common forms of somatic exercises include:

1. **Feldenkrais Method**: Uses gentle movements and focused attention to improve movement patterns and overall body function.

2. **Alexander Technique**: Focuses on re-educating the body to use muscles efficiently and with less tension.

3. **Hanna Somatics**: Involves specific movements to reprogram the brain's control of muscles, relieving chronic pain and improving mobility.

4. **Body-Mind Centering**: Combines movement, touch, voice, and mind to explore and understand the body's systems and patterns.

5. **Tai Chi and Qigong**: Traditional Chinese practices that combine movement, breath control, and meditation to enhance physical and mental well-being.

These exercises can be beneficial for people of all ages and fitness levels, helping to improve posture, flexibility, coordination, and overall health.

Getting my Hygge on today…

Rather fitting that the Daily Ritual in my Silk and Sonder Journal was all about Hygge yesterday, and today we have temps below 70° here...
