We are almost to that time where everyone starts posting about how 2023 will be a new year, new me. The gyms will be full of people on January 2nd, the "diets" will start and everyone will be working on their resolutions. While there is nothing wrong with setting goals for the new year, so many people last about 2-3 weeks and then those goals become a thing of the past. This phenomenon actual has a research based name. It is called "temporal landmarks," and tends to occur around birthdays, new months and the big one January 1st. Also known as "fresh start" these are times that when we feel a need to change or set goals. The journal of Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes recently shared an article around temporal landmarks and how they can inspire change, but also need follow up. "Moments that elicit feelings of a “fresh start” have been shown to spur goal initiation. However, successful goal pursuit requires not only goal initiation but also persistent effort investment." So, it is not just setting that goal, but also planning the action steps, visualizing yourself taking those actions and then actually DOING the actions. As we near January 1, I will be sharing ways to capitalize on this "temporal landmark" known as the new year, and help others prepare for the hard work it takes to change.
