Rather fitting that the Daily Ritual in my Silk and Sonder Journal was all about Hygge yesterday, and today we have temps below 70° here on the gulf coast of Florida. Yes, I know that’s not that cold, but here it is.
Hygge (pronounced “hoo-gah”) is a Danish and Norwegian concept that emphasizes coziness, comfort, and contentment. It’s more than just a word; it’s a lifestyle approach that focuses on cultivating a warm, inviting atmosphere and enjoying the simple pleasures of life. Often associated with cold weather, hygge encourages creating a snug environment filled with soft lighting, candles, warm blankets, and good company.
Key Elements of Hygge:
1. Atmosphere: Low lighting, warm tones, and candles create a soothing space.
2. Comfort: Soft textures like knit blankets, plush cushions, and cozy socks are staples.
3. Togetherness: Spending quality time with loved ones or enjoying solitude in a mindful way.
4. Indulgence: Simple pleasures like hot drinks, baked goods, or a hearty meal.
5. Presence: Being fully engaged in the moment, whether you’re reading a book or enjoying a conversation.
Hygge is about slowing down and finding joy in life’s small, everyday moments. It’s often linked to the Danish sense of well-being and happiness, contributing to Denmark’s reputation as one of the happiest countries in the world.
Today is my first day of Thanksgiving break and I am taking advantage and being intentional about living with Hygge. I have my sweatpants and a sweatshirt on, a cup of hot oolong tea, my color books and journals ready to go.
Haven’t tried the journal?
Need some amazing tea?
