Energy Density- What's it all about?

Writer's picture: Melissa PowellMelissa Powell

When choosing foods to eat, especially snacks there are endless choices. If you are trying to stay in a caloric deficit, finding foods to make you full can be a hard task. Knowing about energy density can help. Energy density is the amount of energy or calories in a particular weight of food and is generally presented as the number of calories in a gram (kcal/g). Foods with a lower energy density provide fewer calories per gram than foods with a higher energy density. Choosing foods with a low density will allow you to eat a larger quantity. For example: broccoli has about 35 calories per 100 g, while pretzels have around 380 calories per 100 g. Loading your plate with low density foods like leafy vegetables and fruits will help curb cravings and help satiate hunger longer.
